Smith Easement

Type of Transaction: Easement

Date of Acquisition: 1997
Acres: 114

About the easement:

The first major easement acquired by the Tewksbury Land Trust in the late 1990s was the Smith easement, a sheep farm of about 120 acres in the heart of Tewksbury Township. This happened at time when development pressure was encouraging community support of land preservation. Because of their conservation mindedness (and farsightedness), the Smith family donated this easement to the still new land trust.

The logistics involved in protecting a large family farm proved to be challenging for the newly established organization, but the rewards were immense.

This property is of particular value because it is adjacent to and accessible from the popular 170 acre Christie Hoffman Park. Securing this initial easement not only assured the Smiths that their land would be protected well into the future, but provided TLT with the inspiration and leverage needed to preserve additional acreage elsewhere in the community.
