The Tewksbury Land Trust’s Annual Report celebrates a year of hard work in preserving open spaces, promoting environmental stewardship, and bringing the community together. In 2024, we achieved major milestones, such as finishing the western section of our Ten Mile Trail Project and securing grants for upgrades. We also hosted fun events like bird walks, historical talks, and wellness hikes to explore Tewksbury’s natural beauty. Our incredible volunteers contributed to stream restoration and invasive species removal, ensuring our preserves thrive as safe havens for wildlife and visitors. We look forward to expanding our efforts with the support of our members, volunteers, and partners.
This past year has been one of growth, collaboration, and significant accomplishments for the Tewksbury Land Trust. As we reflect on the achievements highlighted in our 2024 Annual Report, it is clear that our community’s dedication to conservation and stewardship has never been stronger. From new trail projects to ongoing preservation efforts, the past year has brought renewed energy and focus to our mission of protecting Tewksbury’s cherished landscapes for future generations.
One of the key highlights of 2024 was the progress made on our ambitious Ten Mile Trail Project. Thanks to a combination of public funding and generous private donations, we successfully completed the western section of the trail, including the newly designated “Kenny Trail.” This segment, named in honor of former TLT President Kenneth H. Klipstein, offers visitors a unique opportunity to experience Tewksbury’s natural beauty, winding through dense woodlands, open fields, and along the scenic Cold Brook. The culmination of this project reflects our commitment to expanding access to our preserves, making it easier for residents and visitors alike to explore the rich ecological and historical tapestry of our region.
In addition to the trail expansions, this year also marked an impressive increase in our stewardship efforts. Our team of dedicated volunteers, alongside contracted partners, played a critical role in enhancing the health of our preserves. Notable projects included stream bed restoration at the Lance Preserve, invasive species removal at Sutton Preserve, and the rehabilitation of the historic lime kiln. Each of these initiatives was driven by the invaluable contributions of community members who generously donated their time and expertise. Their efforts have not only restored these areas but have also provided a healthier habitat for local wildlife, from migratory birds to native plant species.
Beyond the physical work on the ground, we also focused on engaging and educating our community. This year, we hosted a range of events that invited residents to deepen their connection with the natural world. Bird walks led by local naturalist Deb DeSalvo and historical talks by our very own Chris Teasdale brought together nature enthusiasts and history buffs alike. These events, along with our popular wellness hikes and yoga sessions, were designed to inspire a sense of appreciation for the unique landscapes that define Tewksbury. By fostering a culture of learning and exploration, we continue to build a strong, informed community that supports our mission.
The Tewksbury Land Trust’s commitment to conservation is also reflected in the partnerships we have cultivated over the past year. By collaborating with organizations like the New Jersey Conservation Foundation and the Raritan Headwaters Association, we have been able to leverage additional resources and expertise. These partnerships have not only enhanced our stewardship capabilities but have also brought new opportunities for land preservation. One particularly inspiring partnership involved securing a Green Acres Stewardship grant, which will fund trail improvements and habitat restoration efforts across several key preserves. These collaborations exemplify how working together can amplify our impact and ensure a sustainable future for our open spaces.
As we look ahead to 2025, we are filled with optimism and a renewed sense of purpose. The challenges of conserving land in a rapidly developing world are significant, but the support of our members, donors, and volunteers gives us the strength to continue. With a clear vision and the dedication of our community, we are confident that the coming year will bring even more opportunities to protect and enhance the natural beauty of Tewksbury. We invite you to join us on this journey, whether through volunteering, attending events, or simply enjoying a walk on one of our trails. Together, we can preserve these precious spaces for generations to come.
