About the Preserve:
The Tewksbury Land Trust purchased this land from long-time residents of the township, the Lance family, with the support of a number of local organizations, including Tewksbury Township, Hunterdon County, the State Green Acres program, and the Lamington Conservancy, the New Jersey Conservation Foundation and the Raritan Headwaters Association, as well as generous local residents.
The Lance Preserve sits along Fox Hill Road, and contains a headwaters feeder stream for the Cold Brook. It is surrounded by fields on either side, and a wooded hillside in the Highlands Preservation area of approximately 20 acres.
In recent years, the Land Trust has been engaged in stewardship activities around the feeder stream that has been partly funded by the Natural Resources Conservation Service, an offshoot of the Department of Agriculture. Woodland Stewardship plans have been drawn up for on-going forest management, including the removal of diseased trees, the installation of a kestrel box, the creation of brush piles for wildlife habitat, the installation of some small deer exclosures to protect native growth from deer browse, and the maintenance of hiking trails.
A new parking area on Fox Hill Road is planned to provide easy access to the preserve, and a kiosk on the small access road supplies relevant information and a map.
