About the Preserve:
The Jeffrey property is a former farm which includes several fields, woodlands, and headwaters terrain at the western border of Tewksbury Township. The property abuts Water Street, a rural road that follows a feeder to the Rockaway stream, a NJ-designated Class 1 Trout Production tributary to the Raritan River. It provides a varied and interesting walk in natural woods and fields.
The Jeffrey property essentially sits as the entry point to the township’s registered historic hamlet of Mountainville. Before conserving the property, TLT helped the preservation-minded owner, Mr. Jeffrey, mow the farm fields. This maintenance is now part of the regular stewardship of this expansive property.
TLT has continued additional stewardship activities, including previous work with Girl Scouts and Brownies to help plant native species, and a recent installation of a kestrel box monitored by the NJDEP Fish and Wildlife Division.
