About the Preserve:
The Christmas Tree Farm is a former commercial operation where Christmas trees were raised and sold to the local community.
Over the years, the TLT has continued stewardship activities, including work to shore up existing sheds and the original warming cabin, maintain trails, remove old farm debris (while leaving a few antiques), mow fields, and work on managing the invasive plants.
The property is moderately to significantly sloped, gaining about 200 feet in elevation from its southern border along Sawmill Road to its northern border along Tiger Drive. It sits completely within the Highlands District, as defined by the New Jersey DEP Highlands Water Protection and Planning Act.
The site contains open fields, planted fields with maturing pines, mature pine groves, and native woodlands. As with many wooded sites in northern New Jersey, there is significant deer browse, significant areas of invasive plants, and areas where mature trees have been damaged or uprooted from intense storm activity.
The TLT maintains active deer hunting management on the property to limit the amount of deer browse to the native and planted understory.
